The Brief

Newly established Edinburgh theatre school, Jazz Hands Academy needed an eye-catching way to promote their classes. A key part of the start-up marketing strategy was a mass-mailout to schools & activity groups in Edinburgh and the surrounding area, but like many start-up businesses, the budget was tight and so we were asked to create a design solution that was high on impact and low on cost.

Our Solution: Flyer Design

Flyers are often viewed as nothing more than pieces of throwaway advertising but the low cost of printing means they can be a budget-friendly way to carry out a mass marketing campaign. The trick to successful flyer design is to ensure that the layout design isn’t too ‘busy‘ and that a high quality paper is used during the print process.

Coming up with the concept of the Flyer as an invitation rather than an advertisment we used modern typography in combination with high-quality stock photography to create a strikingly contemporary 2-sided A5 flyer which positioned the brand as a professional theatre school.

The flyer was printed on a heavy-weight 450gsm card with a mirror gloss finish. The cost of the better quality card and gloss finish was minimal but gave the flyer a luxurious feel, making it much less likely to be thrown away.

The Result

Take-up of the introductory offer was very high with a good percentage of the attendees going on to book further dance classes. The Academy has now expanded and moved to larger premises in Fife.
