Responsive Website Design & Build Derwentside Detached Youth Project

The Brief

Formerly known as Consett Churches Detached Youth Project, the Derwentside Detached Youth Project (DDYP) is a local charity engaged in outreach work supporting disenfranchised young people in the Consett area.

Having won the pitch, the brief was to create a modern, visually appealing website which provided a “reassuring and business-like” appearance to funding bodies while appealing to the young people in Consett.

In addition to the website design and build, the DDYP also required that their existing administrative system was moved to G-Suite; a cloud-based system enabling collaborative working between the charity’s Project Manager, Team members and Trustees.

Our Solution: Responsive Website Design & Build

Using the WordPress Content Management system we delivered a bespoke designed, responsive website which incorporated bright colours, white space and dynamic imagery. By redefining the page content, streamlining the navigation system and creating anchor links between relevant sections of the website, we were able to drastically reduce the number of pages across the site and provide a clear path to information for website visitors.

As the DDYP were keen to manage their website in-house, the website incorporates a modular drag-and-drop page builder as part of the build. Template pages were also created as a way of providing ready-made page layouts for future use.

During the build we worked with the DDYP to refresh the content of the website. This included search-engine optimised text content, web optimisation and the reformatting of all of the photographs and galleries used throughout the website. Using real-life photos of DDYP members as they engaged in various outward bound and charitable activities gives a real sense of the important work done by the DDYP.

Our Solution: Logo Design

A change of name is always a good time to refresh and/or reconsider brand identity. The original plan had been for one of the young people to design the logo but unfortunately an issue with image permissions meant that their design could not be used. Stepping in at the eleventh hour, we kept to the spirit of the original design brief and came up with a bright contemporary logo design which emphasised the inclusivity of the DDYP. To ensure brand consistency, the new logo will be used across the whole of the DDYP including business stationery, transport and funding applications and reports.

Our Solution: I.T.Integration

The DDYP were keen to move to a cloud-based system that enabled collaborative working between members of the Team. G-Suite for non-profit organisations had already been selected as the interface and we were asked to identify the most useful options, configure the necessary elements and train the DDYP team on using the new system.

Project scope included the creation of standardised @ddyp.org.uk email addresses across the organisation, enabling access to the G-Suite portal, centralisation of file-management & storage facilities, creation of shared drives and calendars and delivering collaborative and remote working across shared projects.

One-on-one training via telephone/video conferencing and small goup workshops as well as bespoke “How To” documentation for both the website and G-Suite were also supplied.

The Result

Derwentside Detached Youth Project now have a bright, responsive, fast-loading, easy to use website. Search Engine Optimisation and the addition of Google Analytics means that it is now possible to measure the level of visitor interaction across the website. The brand has been sympathetically updated with new colours while the creation of a new dynamic logo design highlights the important work done by the charity across the whole of the Derwentside area.
