The Client

Hiking 4 Health is a registered charity with the aim of increasing and encouraging physical activity and emotional health through walks and walking related activities. Founded by Keiron Young, it builds upon the success of his earlier project, the Consett Hiking Group and incorporates the “Heritage 100”, a series of 100 walks between the Heritage coast through the vale of Durham and out into the Durham dales.

The Design Brief

The brief was simple: to design and build a fast-loading, easy-to-use, responsive website which could be managed in-house by Keiron and his team. A link to Amazon enabling people to purchase “The Walker” Keiron’s first novel was also required.

Our Solution: Responsive Web Design

Kieron’s stunning photos of County Durham were the perfect start point for the website design. Used to inject bold straps of colour, they also provided clear delination between the different sections of the website.  A responsive menu was created and anchor links were also added throughout the text to aid navigation.

An important aspect of the build was to make sure that the website ranked highly in Search Engines and featured prominently in organic searches. To achieve this we ensured that search-engine optimised text content was used throughout. Additionally, all images used throughout the site were sized and optimised for the web before being uploaded.  Google Analytics was added to all pages in the website and the website code was optimised to score as highly as possible on Google Pagespeed and Mobility tests.

As updates to the website content were to be made in-house it was also important that the back-end admin structure of the site was designed to be as straightforward and easy-to-use as the front-end/visitor facing pages. The website build includes a modular page builder and a series of template pages were created to provide ready-made page layouts for future use.  Bespoke “How To” documents and “as-needed” telephone support means that the Hiking4Health team can confidently manage the website on a day-to-day basis.

The Result

Launched in Feburary 2020, just prior to the first confinement, the website continues to do well in Search Engines and there is lively interaction via the comments on the Steeltown Blog page.  Perhaps the greatest indicator of the success of the project (& indirectly the website) is the fact that if you look closely at one of the pictures of the DDYP website, you’ll notice a Heritage 100 waymarker featured in one of the screenshots!

UPDATE JAN 2023 – We are thrilled that Hiking 4 Health have asked us to deliver website support and maintenance, hosting and ongoing WordPress training as and when required.

UPDATE JAN 2024 – The Hiking4Health charity is no longer in operation and so the website has been taken offline. We’d like to thank Keiron for being such a wonderful client and wish him all the best for the future.
